This past Sunday, Pastor Kevin urged the church and believers to stand guard against deception in a world full of spiritual counterfeits. Pastor Kevin highlights three crucial directives: Be Alert to the presence of antichrists, rest in the Assurance of the Holy Spirit’s truth, and actively Abide in Christ to secure the promise of eternal life.
Be Alert
Every generation has wondered if they were living in the days when Jesus would come back, and while we do not know the day or hour, we do know this: Jesus is coming again.
Because of that, believers must stay spiritually awake. John warns that “many antichrists have come.” An antichrist is anyone who opposes Christ, denies Christ, or works against the truth of the gospel. This includes more than just the future Antichrist. John says there are already many antichrists in the world.
Pastor Kevin compares this to learning how to spot counterfeit money. The best way to recognize a fake is to know the real thing well. In the same way, believers must know the truth of Jesus Christ so clearly that deception becomes easier to identify.
Assurance
Even though John warns believers about deception, he also gives them assurance.
Christians are not left helpless. The Holy Spirit convicts, guides, teaches, and gives wisdom. When believers face confusion, spiritual attacks, or difficult decisions, they can trust that God has not abandoned them. He has given them His Spirit and His Word.
God is not the author of confusion, division, or chaos; those are the hallmarks of Satan.
Abide in Christ
John’s final instruction is to abide in Christ. That means to remain in Him, stay rooted in Him, and continue in the truth of the gospel.
To abide in Christ means we do not drift away when deception comes. We do not abandon truth when the world pushes back. We do not replace the gospel with something more popular or comfortable. We stay with Jesus.
