Every person has a story to tell. Some stories are dramatic, while others may seem ordinary, but every believer has a testimony of what Jesus Christ has done in their life. Pastor Kevin walks through 1 John 1 and highlights John’s personal testimony about Jesus. As one of Christ’s closest disciples, John was not sharing hearsay or secondhand information. He was sharing what he had personally seen, heard, and experienced. Through his testimony, John challenges believers to embrace the truth of Jesus Christ, walk in His light, and boldly share the good news with others.

We Have Seen It

John begins by pointing believers back to the beginning. He reminds his readers that Jesus was not simply a good teacher who appeared in history. Jesus existed from the beginning with God and was present at creation itself.

Genesis 1:1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

John’s testimony carries weight because…

        • John personally experienced Jesus
        • John heard His teachings
        • John saw His miracles
        • John walked alongside Him

John was not guessing about who Jesus was. He knew because he had witnessed it firsthand. (1 John 1:1)

We Testify to It

After seeing Jesus for himself, John could not remain silent. He testified to what he had witnessed. Just as a witness in a courtroom gives testimony based on personal experience, John boldly declared the truth about Jesus. (1 John 1:2)

Every Christian has a testimony. Some stories involve dramatic life changes, while others involve growing up in the faith and consistently following Christ. Regardless of the details, every believer has a story that points to God’s grace.

When Jesus changes a life, believers should be willing to share that story with family, friends, coworkers, and anyone who needs to hear the hope found in Christ. Testifying about God’s work is one of the most powerful ways to encourage others and point them toward salvation

We’re Proclaiming It

John’s desire was that others would experience the same relationship with God that he had experienced. Sharing the gospel is not simply about passing along information. It is about inviting others into fellowship with Christ and helping them discover lasting joy. (1 John 1:2-4)

Pastor Kevin compared this to sharing exciting news with friends. People naturally tell others about a great deal, a favorite restaurant, or an exciting experience because they want others to enjoy it too. The gospel is far greater than any temporary benefit because it offers forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

    God is Light

John proclaims a simple but powerful truth: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all.

The wonderful promise of Scripture is that those who walk in the light are cleansed from all sin through the blood of Jesus Christ. God’s forgiveness is complete and available to every believer.

The Power of Confession and Forgiveness

Pastor Kevin reminded us that Christians do not need to carry the weight of past sins forever. When believers confess their sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse them from all unrighteousness.

One of the most encouraging verses in the chapter is 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
