Pastor Gene Watkins teaches from Proverbs 3:1-10 but focuses his message on Proverbs 3:5-6 to reveal what authentic biblical faith looks like in a believer’s life. True trust is far from superficial; it demands surrendering the very core of our being, setting aside fragile human comprehension in favor of divine wisdom, aligning the daily conduct of our lives with God’s commands, and resting with total confidence in the Lord’s absolute direction and ultimate deliverance. Pastor Gene provides a roadmap for shifting from a naturally driven life to a supernaturally sustained walk with Jesus Christ.
Trust With the Core of Your Being
Proverbs 3:5 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”
-
-
-
- The “heart” in scripture represents the center, the core, and the absolute centerpiece of a person. Trusting God cannot be a partial venture; it requires the entire man.
- Referencing Ephesians 3:14-19, Pastor Gene explains that when you commit to Christ, the Holy Spirit “sets up housekeeping” in your inner being, filling the unique void designed just for Him.
- What happens at the core will inevitably show up on the outside. As Luke 6:45 notes, “…out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

Trust With the Comprehension of God
Relying on human intellect is a dangerous trap because the human brain is flesh, and the flesh naturally inclines toward sin and short-sightedness. To experience the essence of trust, we must exchange man’s fragile logic for the absolute authority of God’s Word.
To illustrate the danger of human comprehension, Pastor Watkins contrasts spiritual wisdom with natural thinking:
-
-
- Mans Understanding: The faithless spies in Numbers 13 who saw themselves as “grasshoppers” next to giants.
- Outcome: 40 years of wandering and dying in the wilderness.
- God’s Comprehension: The spiritual discernment outlined by Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:6-10.
- Access to hidden divine wisdom and paths made straight.
- Mans Understanding: The faithless spies in Numbers 13 who saw themselves as “grasshoppers” next to giants.

We Trust With the Conduct of Our Lives
Acknowledging God isn’t just for Sunday mornings or when people are watching; it dictates our conduct in every hidden corner of our lives. Pastor Watkins breaks this conduct down into two categories:
-
-
-
- The Conduct of Our Attitude
- According to Colossians 3:1-4, we must set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. Trusting God means actively putting to death the old self – killing off earthly attitudes like anger, wrath, malice, and slander and putting on a new self renewed in the image of our Creator.
- The Conduct of Our Actions
- Pastor Gene clarifies Philippians 4:13 is often taken out of context. Looking at verses 11-12, Paul was specifically talking about the supernatural ability to be content in every circumstance -whether facing hunger or abundance, being brought low or abounding. True trust is found in steady contentment.

Trust With Confidence in our Lord
The final component of trust is absolute confidence. When we relinquish our rights to God, we can stand firmly on two major promises:
-
-
- Confidence in His Direction: As 1 Peter 2:21-25 outlines, Christ left us a perfect example to follow. He cleared the path, bore our sins on the tree, and acts as the secure Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.
- Confidence in His Deliverance: True trust removes the fear of the future. Grounded in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, believers have the ultimate confidence that Christ will return, the dead in Christ will rise, and we will be caught up together to be with the Lord forever.
-
“The core of our being is what God wants us to change. That’s what He wants us to change. Our character. Who we are inside. When the core is changed, the outward expression is changed. That is why He directs His attention to the heart of man or His core. We must give Him our heart, relinquish all rights to Him. In other words, trust Him with all that we are. And when this takes place and we obtain the comprehension needed to follow His instructions, we will find that the way God comprehends things is not the way man does. He will change your perspective. Then when our comprehension is changed, our conduct will reflect it. We will begin to live differently when we live in the confidence of Jesus. In the confidence of Jesus’ work in our lives. Through his life in us, we can rest assured our direction and deliverance through him. Amen.”
