On Mother’s Day, Pastor Kevin Long explores the life of an unnamed but extraordinary woman from the Old Testament whose story spans 2 Kings 4 and 2 Kings 8. Despite her wealth and status, she is defined not by her resources, but by her radical hospitality and unwavering faith in the face of impossible circumstances. From the miraculous birth and restoration of her son to the preservation of her household during a seven-year famine, her life serves as a masterclass in spiritual discipline.

She Waited on God

History might not remember our name, but that is okay. The Shunammite Woman found in the Old Testament text doesn’t even tell us her name. Shunammite woman had to learn the art of the holy pause. After Elisha promised her a son, she didn’t see results the next day.

        • The Nine-Month Lesson – Like every mother, it takes 9 months for a child to grow in the womb God’s greatest miracles require a season of development.
        • Divine Timing – Waiting is not passive, but rather an act of faith. Even when her son later died, she maintained her composure, famously telling her husband and the prophet’s servant, “All is well.” (2 Kings 4:26)

She Listened to God

In Chapter 8, the scene shifts. Elisha warns the woman of a coming seven-year famine. Because she had spent years cultivating a relationship with the prophet, she knew his voice represented the voice of God.

      • Listening to God requires more than a “checked box” prayer. It involves spending time in the Word until He speaks to your specific situation.
      • Just as Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened to see the fiery chariots, we must listen and look beyond our physical circumstances to see God’s provision.

“When we’re praying to God, we’re talking to God. When we’re reading God’s word,
He is talking to us.” – Pastor Kevin

She Obeyed God

Listening is one thing; acting is another. When God told her to leave her land and “sojourn wherever you can,” (2 Kings 8:1) she didn’t demand an itinerary

        • Many of us drag our feet because we want to know if the money and the people will be there before we take the first step. The Shunammite woman simply arose and went.
        • Obedience and belief go hand in hand. If you believe He is the Creator who puts breath in your lungs, you can trust Him with the details.

She Trusted God

After seven years in the land of the Philistines, the woman returned to appeal to the king for her house and land. This is where her trust met God’s perfect coincidence. (2 Kings 8:6)

      • She walked into the king’s court at the exact moment Elisha’s servant was telling the king about her son being raised from the dead.
      • Because she trusted God’s lead, the king didn’t just give her land back, he ordered that she be repaid for seven years’ worth of produce that the land had generated while she was gone.
