Jesus came to earth because we needed a Savior, and Pastor Kevin Long used Matthew 2:1–12 to show how the wise men respond to that truth with faith, discernment, and worship. In this message, we see three clear themes: the Distinction of those who genuinely seek Christ, the Deception of Herod’s hidden motives and Satan’s tactics, and the Devotion of the wise men who followed God’s leading, rejoiced when they found Jesus, and worshiped Him with their lives and their gifts.

Distinction

The wise men stand out because they were not spectators, they were seekers. They traveled from the east, pursued the prophecies, and followed the star because they believed something real was happening. Their journey reminds us that wisdom still looks the same today: wise people seek Jesus, and those who seek Him will find Him. While the wise men came to worship, Herod and even Jerusalem reacted with trouble, showing the contrast between hearts that surrender to Christ and hearts that feel threatened by Him.

Deception

Herod moved in secrecy, which is often where sin and darkness prefer to operate. Herod questioned the wise men privately, then sent them to Bethlehem with a false spiritual mask: “Bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” It sounded religious, but it was a trap. Herod mixed truth with deception, a familiar tactic of Satan, and his real goal was to destroy Jesus to protect his own power. God protected the wise men by warning them in a dream, exposing the lie and redirecting them away from danger.

Devotion

The wise men did not just believe, they acted. They took the first step without knowing every detail, and God guided them the rest of the way. When the star appeared again and led them to Jesus, they responded with overflowing joy. Then, when they entered the house, they fell down and worshiped. Their devotion showed up in surrendered posture, obedient choices, and generous gifts. The gifts also pointed to who Jesus is: the King, the Priest, and the Prophet, the promised Messiah worthy of everything.

Closing Challenge

This story leaves us with a simple question: will we respond like the wise men, diligently seeking Christ with joyful obedience, or will we resist Him like Herod, protecting our own control? The wise path is still the same: seek Jesus, worship Him, and follow God’s direction even when it requires a different route.
