Pastor Gene Watkins speaks from Matthew 7:24-29. In the closing words of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shows how to build a life that stands when storms come. Two builders hear the same words. One obeys and builds on rock. One ignores and builds on sand. The difference is not information but obedience. Wisdom is hearing and doing the words of Jesus. Folly is hearing and doing nothing.

Hear and do

    • Jesus invites everyone who hears His words to put them into practice.

    • Obedience is the proof of genuine faith and the path to a secure life.

    • Information without application leaves the soul unsteady.

The wise builder

    • Builds on the rock by obeying Christ’s teaching.

    • Faces rain, floods, and winds yet the house stands because the foundation is firm.

    • Rock solid living grows from daily choices to trust and obey.

The foolish builder

    • Hears the same teaching but does not act.

    • Faces the same storms but the house falls with great ruin because the base is sand.

    • Ignoring the Word is not neutral. It is a decision that leads to collapse.

Fruit and authenticity

    • Jesus teaches that true teachers and true disciples are known by their fruit.

    • Good trees bear good fruit. Corrupt trees bear bad fruit.

    • Not everyone who says Lord will enter the kingdom. Only those who do the will of the Father.

The narrow way today

    • Jesus calls His followers to the narrow gate and the hard road that leads to life.

    • Love enemies. Return good for evil. Treat others as you wish to be treated.

    • These commands are impossible in our own strength. Christ in us makes obedience possible.

Hope for the future

    • Jesus speaks with unmatched authority. Crowds were astonished because His words carried the weight of heaven.

    • He promises to prepare a place for His people and to come again.

    • Building on the rock today is the surest preparation for eternity.

How to build on the rock this week

    • Read Matthew chapters 5 to 7 and write one action you will obey today.

    • Pray before the day begins. Ask the Spirit to help you hear and do.

    • Reconcile with someone you have resisted. Practice the Golden Rule.

    • Evaluate teaching by its fruit. Hold to Scripture.

    • Share the gospel with one person and invite them to church.
