In this message, Pastor Kevin Long teaches from James 1:26; James 3:1-12, offering clear guidance on how believers should conduct themselves as children of God. Building on the foundation of salvation in this passage transitions from our spiritual birth to our daily behavior. Once we become sons and daughters of God, we are called to live in a way that reflects our heavenly Father.

The Power to Direct
James uses the imagery of a bit in a horse’s mouth and a rudder steering a ship to show how something small can determine direction. Just as these tools guide large forces, the tongue can guide lives. Teachers, parents, and leaders influence others through their words. Truth, correction, and encouragement can help shape a life for God, but if our words aren’t controlled by wisdom, they can just as easily lead others astray.

The Power to Destroy
James compares the tongue to fire and poison. Fire spreads quickly and visibly. Poison works quietly and slowly. Both are dangerous. Gossip, slander, and careless speech can tear down individuals, families, and even churches. Though forgiveness is possible, the damage caused by words often remains. What we say has the power to wound deeply, especially when it’s based on assumption or hearsay rather than truth.

The Power to Delight
The tongue can also be a source of life. James points to a spring and a fruitful tree to describe how refreshing and encouraging our words can be. A kind word, a loving correction, or a word of truth in the right moment can lift someone’s spirit and strengthen their faith. Believers are called to use their speech in ways that reflect Christ, bringing grace and hope to others.

The Source: The Heart
Jesus says in Luke 6:45 that the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. Our words reveal what is happening inside us. A gossiping or harsh tongue points to a heart in need of cleansing. True change begins when we allow Jesus to transform our hearts. Through confession, surrender, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are made new from the inside out—and that change will be heard in the way we speak.

Closing Challenge
James reminds us that an unbridled tongue reflects a deceived heart and a worthless faith. Pastor Kevin Long challenges each of us to examine our words and what they reveal about our hearts. Are we building up or tearing down? Encouraging or criticizing? Jesus Christ offers forgiveness and transformation. He alone can cleanse the heart and teach us to use our words for His glory.
