Easter morning is often filled with traditions – from hiding eggs to wearing  you “Easter best.” Pastor Kevin reminds us in his sermon “Just A Little Walk With Jesus,” the heart of the season lies in an empty tomb and a transformative journey. Reading from Luke 24:13-35, this message explores the walk to Emmaus, where two discouraged disciples encounter the risen Christ. Through their journey, we see that Jesus isn’t a distant figure of history; He is the Savior who actively walks with us, talks with us, teaches us, and brings us together to experience the reality of His resurrection and the grace of His substitutionary sacrifice.

Jesus Walked With Them (v. 13-16)

The story begins with two disciples traveling seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus, crushed by the events of the crucifixion. They had hoped Jesus would redeem Israel, but now He was gone.

Jesus meets us in our lowest lows. Whether you are in a season of grief or deep confusion, Jesus is walking step-for-step with you. Even if your eyes are “kept from recognizing him” (v.16), He is a constant comfort in the journey.

Jesus Talked With Them (v. 17-26)

Jesus doesn’t just walk in silence; He engages. (v.17)

Jesus wants us to use our words. He invites us to unpack our hearts to Him.

Jesus Taught Them (v. 25-29)

The disciples were “slow of heart to believe” (v. 25), so Jesus took them back to the basics.

Jesus taught them (v.27) that the crucifixion wasn’t a defeat, but a necessary step for the Christ to enter His glory. He was the perfect fulfillment of the law that we couldn’t keep.

Jesus Brought Them Together (v.30-35)

Finally, the walk ends at a table. It is in the breaking of bread – the simple act of fellowship – that their eyes are opened and they recognize Him. (v. 30-31)

Once they recognized Jesus, they didn’t stay in Emmaus. They immediately returned to Jerusalem to find the eleven disciples. (v.33)

Jesus uses His presence to bring us together. He calls us out of isolation and back into the community of believers to proclaim the Gospel and tell others about Him.
