In this Christmas message from Luke 2:1-21, Pastor Kevin Long reminded the church that the birth of Jesus is far more than a familiar tradition. It is the moment God entered human history on purpose, at the right time, in the right place, to bring hope into a world filled with fear and chaos. God directed events to fulfill prophecy, announced the Savior’s arrival through angels, and invited ordinary shepherds to respond.
It is Time
Luke records the birth of Jesus in simple words: “the time came for her to give birth.” (v. 6) Pastor Kevin emphasized that this moment was not random or rushed. God used a Roman census to move Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, fulfilling prophecy and showing His complete control over history.
The world Jesus entered was full of fear, uncertainty, and spiritual conflict, much like today. Yet God’s timing was perfect. When the world seemed most broken, God sent His Son. Christmas reminds us that God is never late, and His plan is always moving forward, even when circumstances feel chaotic.
A Sign for You
The shepherds were busy working when heaven interrupted their night. An angel appeared, the glory of the Lord shone around them, and fear followed. But the message quickly shifted to hope: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” (v. 10)
God did not stop at the announcement. He gave them a clear sign. They would find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. This sign confirmed the truth of the message and fulfilled prophecy. Pastor Kevin reminded listeners that God often gives just enough direction for the next step, not every detail. The gospel itself is God’s sign to the world, clear, personal, and inviting a response.
Go With Haste
After the angels returned to heaven, the shepherds did not hesitate. They said, “Let us go,” (v. 15) and Scripture says they went with haste. They found Jesus exactly as they had been told, shared the message with others, and returned praising God.
Pastor Kevin challenged the church to respond the same way. When God calls, delay is not faith. Whether it is salvation, repentance, obedience, or a step of service, the call is to move quickly. Christmas is not just something to admire, it is a message that demands a response.
Challenge
Christmas is not a myth or a sentimental tradition. It is a glorious reality. God sent His Son to relate to us, to redeem us, and to be the substitute for our sin. The gospel has been proclaimed. The sign has been given. The question remains: what will you do with it? Like the shepherds, may we go with haste to Jesus.
