When life feels chaotic like a pirate on the run, James calls us to trade self ruled living for God ruled living. Continuing from last week’s teaching on prayer, Pastor Kevin Long showed how grace filled obedience reorders a life that has been running from God. In James 4:7–12 we receive nine practical responses that move us from worldly chaos to Christ shaped humility and peace.

Relinquish control
Submit yourselves to God. Surrender is the starting line for spiritual change. When our way is not working, we yield to His authority and invite His leadership in every area of life.

Resist the devil
Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Spiritual opposition is real, but it is not ultimate. Standing under God’s authority empowers us to say no to temptation and disruption.

Restore worship as a priority
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Rebuild the rhythms that keep you close to Christ through gathered worship, Scripture, prayer, rest, giving, serving, and work offered to the Lord.

Renounce sinful actions
Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Break with practices that grieve God. Repent in concrete ways and pursue holiness in daily choices.

Reject sinful attitudes
Purify your hearts, you double minded. Invite the Spirit to realign motives, loyalties, and inner desires so your heart is whole toward God.

React to sin with sorrow
Be wretched and mourn and weep. Treat sin seriously. Let godly grief produce repentance and renewed obedience rather than indifference.

Refrain from a frivolous view of evil
Let your laughter be turned to mourning. Refuse to make light of what destroys lives. Take a clear, courageous stand for righteousness.

Respond humbly to success
Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will exalt you. Receive God given opportunities with gratitude and humility, giving Him glory rather than centering self.

Refuse to slander fellow Christians
Do not speak evil against one another. There is one Lawgiver and Judge. Build up the body with gracious speech and leave judgment in God’s hands.

Gospel invitation and hope
The way out of a pirate life is through the grace of Jesus. He welcomes those who submit to Him, cleanses those who confess, and lifts the humble with forgiveness and new life.
